Lessons of an Escapee Parrot… And How to Apply to Your Biz or Advertising
One day, my in-laws were driving home when they stopped at a roadside stand to buy a bag of oranges.
Inside the car was their parrot Franny.
Almost before the car stopped, my mother-in-law opened the door.
She was so consumed to get those oranges that she forgot about her irrepressible bird.
So you already know what’s next:
Franny zoomed out of the car in green and orange blur...
And disappeared into the nearby thick evergreen forest.
All before my in-laws could do anything but watch in stunned silence.
So what the hell does that have to do with business, marketing, copywriting, etc.?
Good question, smashbait.
The lesson is actually not in the story… but in my brother-in-law’s subsequent action.
Or, more precisely, the reaction to his action.
That is…
He put an ad on InstaSham offering a sizable reward for information leading to Franny’s recovery…
And since it’s on social media, you know what kind of response he got…
Some dude asking if the parrot was actually a tiger because of the outlandish reward…
Some chick asking, provocatively, if she could be my brother-in-law’s lost parrot…
Another asking if he bought the exact color and type of bird and gave it to my brother-in-law would he get the reward…
And on and on and on…
I know you can believe it.
Not surprisingly, it pissed off my brother-in-law. He didn’t like being made fun of… or the lack of understanding about the loss of a beloved pet…
In short, he didn’t appreciate the bad intentions, and he started responding.
Which led him down a labyrinthine rabbit hole from which he didn’t easily escape.
So what does this have to do with marketing, business, and copywriting?
Plenty, plenty, my dear smashcake…

LESSON 1:
Curate your customers. Do this by NOT responding to those with bad intentions.
Why care?
It makes no sense to get offended. Which I know is totally against the grain in today’s world…
But if you have the proper premeditatio malorum mentality and embrace amor fati…
You can boost your business or side hustle or corporate job in the wake of ANYTHING, including bad times and bad people and bad intentions.
It comes across as needy and grab-assy and a whole lot of other gamma shinola.
LESSON 2:
Reliance on SM as your main advertising platform is a death knell for your biz.
(don’t get me started on how bad it affects your personal bidness, too)
It drains your energy, stamina, focus, creativity… all the things you need to keep growing your business.
Remember, a major difference between succeeding and failing is simply this:
Your mindset.
